2002 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

The colour is medium ruby red with violet tints.

A complex, well integrated wine exhibiting the classic Cabernet flavours of cassis and blackcurrants intermingling with blackberries and chocolate.

The palate shows sweet rich blackcurrants and blackberry flavours and is complemented by integrated French oak and mouth-filling fine tannins.

A wine of medium weight that will continue to improve in the medium term.

Comments

"90 points - This is supple, delivering pretty red cherry and thyme flavors, with a tinge of smoke, against the fuzz of fine-grained tannins. Strikes a winning balance as it all lingers on the harmonious finish. Drink now through 2015."
Wine Spectator, Harvey Steiman, October 15th 2008
"Perhaps better known for its Chardonnay, leeuwin also makes an Art Series Cabernet that takes a back seat to no one. The 2002 still boasts youthful scents of fresh mint and cassis, then slowly unfolds on the palate to reveal a rich, full-bodied wine with distinctly ripe, creamy texture. Long and powerful on the finish, with 10 or so years ahead of it."
Wine Enthusiast Magazine, February 2008
"Rimmed by greenish, under-ripe influences, this assertive and hard-edged cabernet combines deep, meaty berry, cherry and plummy fruit with an awkward, sappy extract and an overly enthusiastic measure of smoky mocha/vanilla oak which attempts without success to compensate for the fruit's lack of mid-palate sweetness. Its herbal, tomatoey aromas of cassis, violets and raspberries tend towards capsicum and green beans, while its thinning palate is excessively reliant on coffee ground-like oak."
Jeremy Oliver, 2008 Wine Annual
"The hue is good, though not deep; basically in the mainstream of Leeuwin cabernet style, good length and balance to the savoury black fruits, oak a positive contributor." Cork. 13.5 alc. Rating 92 To 2022
James Halliday Australian Wine Companion, 2008 Edition
(77% cabernet sauvignon, 14% peiti verdot and 9% malbec) "Saturated ruby colour. Flat-out gorgeous aromas of bitter cherry, cassis, graphite, cedar, Cuban tobacco, dark chocolate and dried flowers. On the palate, juicy dark and red fruit flavours play off musky, almost decadent underbrush and tobacco, with precise but understated Asian spice notes adding even more complexity. This boasts remarkable balance and compelling intricacy of fruit, spice and earth qualities on the long, suave finish, picking up notes of violet and fresh rose on the back. For the money, this is a no-brainer in outstanding, ageworthy cabernet." 94 points

"This is a seriously complex, balanced, evolved and intersting Cabernet. Its mouth-coating texture and long, savoury finish point to real top-drawer quality. Top marks."
Joe Fattorini, The Herald, December 2007
